Definition: What does sustainable logistics mean?

Sustainable logistics—also known as green logistics—aims to implement logistical processes in a way that is as resource-efficient, energy-saving, and eco-efficient as possible. In light of the current climate protection debate and legal regulations, such as the Supply Chain Act, this topic is gaining significant importance once again.

The dimensions of sustainability

Sustainability always encompasses several dimensions: what serves ecology and climate protection also brings economic benefits. For example, fuel-efficient driving or lower electricity consumption in the warehouse not only reduces climate-damaging CO2 emissions but also pays off financially through cost savings. Companies can therefore operate more affordably, maintain their profitability, or, in the best case, increase it.

  • Putting energy consumers on a diet: Measures such as optimizing air conditioning, ventilation, and heating, or switching to energy-saving LED lighting systems, provide directly measurable benefits in terms of energy consumption and operating costs.
  • Turning energy consumers into energy producers: Large roof areas on logistics halls are perfect for generating your own renewable electricity with high-performance solar modules and, where possible, using most of it yourself. This means fewer emissions, lower energy costs, and greater independence from public power grids.
  • Implementing electrification in the warehouse: Electric forklifts are increasingly replacing conventional models – the environmental footprint is ideal when the forklifts are charged with self-generated solar power.

Many companies have already recognized the concepts mentioned above for greater sustainability in warehouse logistics and have begun implementing them. The savings achieved are impressive. But that is by no means the end of the road. Significant potential for improving sustainability is hidden not only in building equipment, but even more so in the processes taking place within.

How are deliveries and shipments scheduled? How well are personnel resources utilized throughout the day? Are there avoidable peaks, or even waiting times and delays? And: How much paper is still being handled by the people involved in logistics processes? These few questions alone make it clear that warehouse logistics processes can often be made much more efficient than they currently are.

The key to greater sustainability in warehouse logistics therefore lies in optimizing processes – transparency is the essential prerequisite for this. Transparency means having comprehensive information available in real time, which enables effective warehouse planning. This applies to planning time slots for deliveries and pickups just as much as it does to order picking, inventory management, or improving travel paths within the warehouse.

Warehouse travel distances—and consequently emissions and energy consumption—are reduced, significantly improving the warehouse's carbon footprint.

In today's largely digitized world, it is hard to understand why logistical processes still generate mountains of paper. The environmental organization WWF has calculated that nearly 20 percent of industrially harvested trees go to the paper industry.  

Digital communication instead of paper

In any average warehouse, many kilograms of paper can be saved every year by consistently switching to digital communication and information exchange using suitable software tools, handhelds, scanners, and the like. Reducing and ultimately eliminating paper is therefore also one of the central environmental protection measures in the warehouse. This benefits more than just the environment—modern, digital Logistics 4.0 also increases transparency and efficiency across the entire process.

Other welcome side effects of digitalization: throughput frequency in the warehouse increases, sources of error are minimized, and inventory monitoring is improved. The entire process flow up to goods issue runs much more smoothly and efficiently.
